Getting Carpet Stains Up

Here's a homemade carpet cleaning formula for general spills that's easy to make and will work on many stains. The sooner you get the stain up, the easier it will be to remove. Simply mix equal parts hot water and liquid detergent and stir well. The hotter the water the better, but use caution not to get burned in the process.

Use a porous cloth to blot the solution into your carpet, rub it in gently, then rinse it with a clean hot water rag then finish by drying with a clean rag. Be sure to get all the detergent up so that a residue is not left behind.

For Chewing Gum, remove as much of it as you can with a plastic baggy. The gum adheres to the plastic baggy. Next apply ice to the gum that is left in order to freeze it. Once frozen the gum becomes easy to pick from the rug fibers.

Grease Stains can often be removed using undiluted isopropyl alcohol. Blot the area and then wash with the homemade carpet cleaning formula. If that doesn’t get it all, apply a few drops of fresh hydrogen peroxide and wash again with the homemade carpet cleaning formula.

What Is The Best Way To Clean Carpet?

There are two popular ways of cleaning carpet. Dry cleaning and steam cleaning.

First I would like to tell you about dry cleaning. Dry cleaning is not really dry per say. A high PH chemical is applied to the carpet with a pump sprayer then the cleaning process is executed with the use of a very heavy floor buffer that you would normally see cleaning or waxing hard surface flooring.

There is no extraction (vacuum) in the cleaning process. So... where dose the dirt go? Some of the dirt is absorbed by the cotton bonnet on the buffer then distributed to the rest of your carpet giving you the illusion that the stains are gone when in fact they have been moved from a concentrated area to the rest of your carpet.

The dry cleaning method may be ok for new and unstained carpet but if your carpet is actually stained and soiled this method is only going to clean out your wallet.

Clean Carpets When Moving In

How clean are your carpets?

When moving into a new home, do you wonder how clean the carpets are? You may have noticed the condition of the carpets when viewing the house with the real estate agent. But what happens in between then and moving in can make a difference on how clean the carpets are when you move in. Also, if the previous owners had pets indoors, it may be a good idea to clean the carpets anyway. Pet dander can affect allergy sufferers.

When sellers move out of a home, many neglect having the carpets cleaned. Often in a hurry to finish the buyer’s negotiated terms, clean carpets may be the last thing on the seller’s mind. Take these easy precautions about ensuring your new home has clean carpets, which live up to your standards.

Inspect the carpet closely

First, ensure that the carpets have been vacuumed at all. Perhaps the sellers just moved their belongings out, without taking the time to vacuum the carpets. If there is noticeable dirt or pet hair, do a thorough vacuum cleaning of the carpets. Inspect the carpet along the walls to make sure no dirt or hair is lodged between the molding and the carpet edge. If so, use your vacuum’s attachments to suck up the hidden dirt or hair.

Remove Chewing Gum From Carpet

To remove chewing gum from carpet, you can use your hair dryer. Just heat the gum, being careful not to melt any carpet fibers. Then you can use a piece of plastic wrap or a plastic bag to lift the softened gum away. Allow it to stick to the plastic, and pull it up. This will often get most of the gum.

For the remaining chewing gum, apply Extra Strength Ben Gay, or another muscle rub containing methly salicylate. Use plastic or a rag to pull more gum out, repeating the process if necessary. Once you completely remove the chewing gum from the carpet, clean the spot with a mild detergent solution (a few drops of dishsoap in a cup of warm water). Rinse the area with warm water and dry quickly, first by blotting up any water, then with a fan, if you have one.
